About the workshop
My mission is to show how wonderful your family is. Sometimes it’s messy and loud, but it’s a real miracle, and it’s yours! You are a gift for each other and you have to celebrate this! With photographs, too!
- Historical insight – Step into the origins of (camera-less) photography and experiment with a process once used by artists like Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy.
- The darkroom – Step into a world of silence and focus, where time slows down and creativity takes shape through trays of developer, stop bath, and fixer.
- Learning through experience – Participants work directly with their hands, placing objects, exploring composition, and watching images emerge during development. You will create your own unique photograms using everyday objects and experiment with light, shadow and the chemicals.
-
A sense of wonder – Discover how images appear as if by magic, using only light, objects, and photographic paper.
-
Creative freedom – No camera is needed; shapes, textures, and imagination take center stage. Every photogram is unique and unrepeatable.
-
Mindfulness and presence – Working slowly in the darkroom encourages focus, patience, and appreciation for small details.
-
Confidence in experimentation – A safe, playful space where mistakes often lead to surprising beauty.
-
A tangible artwork to take home – Each participant leaves with their own handmade prints, a physical reminder of the creative process.
-
Community and sharing – The workshop invites conversation, inspiration, and exchange of ideas among like-minded creatives.
- The 2-hour workshop costs 45 NZD, which includes 5 sheets of photo paper and use of the darkroom with all equipment.
- Curiosity and Openness – A willingness to experiment, play, and let go of expectations
- Comfortable Clothing – Darkroom work can involve water and chemicals, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting a few splashes on.
- Objects for Experimentation – We have a collection, but you can also bring small items with interesting shapes or textures (leaves, lace, keys, feathers, flowers, etc.) to use for creating photograms.
- Patience and Presence – The darkroom is a place to slow down and observe; images reveal themselves gradually.
- Respect for the Space – Handling chemicals, paper, and equipment with care, following safety instructions.
- A Spirit of Sharing – Being open to conversation, exchanging ideas, and inspiring one another.
- Have fun!
